2011 in Review and 2012 Wishes

My apologies to my core followers for abandoning my blog... I do have a few good reasons.

1. Christmas came a little early... Bailey's Gotcha Day is 11/22/11. He was pulled from an Oklahoma City Kill Shelter by Friends with Four Paws, a volunteer (Thank you Ethan!) tagged me and the rest was history. I had all intentions of fostering him until FWFP was able to find a forever home; however, my partner John had other ideas and he is now a member of the Schanzuer-tude! pack!

2. In August of 2011 I answered a call to help a homeless man who was living in his car with his 3 Shepherds. I was able to raise some money and the dogs were placed in a kennel in Staten Island until the owner was able to get back on his feet. One week then one month and another and the owner never came forward again; he abandoned them. Precious, Princess and Blackie were residents at the kennel for about 3 months.

Precious (now Precious Chance or "Chancy") is now with a wonderful family in NJ, she has two furry brothers, Bear and Buddy and is loving life with his new mom Janet. Click on the photo below to see more photos of Chancy.

Princess is truly that... a princess. Living on Long Island with her furry siblings Dagwood and Megan along with her two humans and human brother.

And finally, there is Blackie; he has a very long story. I was able to find a foster for Blackie and on September 23rd when I was transporting him, he escaped from his collar and ran away on me. Almost 16 days looking for him in Staten Island and with the help of an incredible core of local volunteers, SICAW, 3 trappers and 1 tracker (yes a dog scent tracker) we were finally able to capture him. He was quarantined for two weeks and after three weeks, he went to a wonderful foster family in Flushing Queens. He is currently enjoying his days with his furry foster sibling Kodi and a cat name Aphrodite. HE IS UP FOR ADOPTION AND IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT ME DIRECTLY.

So aside from the new addition, dog count is now four and these three rescues (something I'd never done before!) my time was not my own.

I have a few wishes for 2012, top on the list is finding Blackie a forever home, paying off what I owe the kennel for boarding 3 dogs for almost 3 months, helping with more rescues but learning not to let it consume all of me (easy to say, hard to do) and finally, to be able to reach out to more people who can help with fostering, rescuing or even volunteering some of their time, either in person or virtually. I started a FB page solely for rescues seeking fosters or forever homes. Canine Collective is a core group of volunteers who I met during Blackie's search in Staten Island. All animals posted on this FB page are personally seen by one of us and we are directly working with the rescue group or local ACC to help save them. Please visit, "like" and share and cross post on your FB pages or on your blogs to help us reach more people that might be able to assist with a foster or forever home. My final wish is to be able to dedicate more time to this blog, I will start with baby step and do my best to update weekly... wish me luck.

Blackie - Foster or Foster to Adopt

Hi, my name is Blackie and I’m pretty famous!

I love long strolls in the park or beach I’m sweet and understandably reserved and require a patient, loving and safe home to start my new life.

2yr old, Male, Neutered, Micro Chip, Sheppard Mix.

Blackie does well with cats and female dogs, he is good around male dogs who are neutered, not intact. He walks very well on a choker or collar and harness combined, is very affectionate, loves people both children and adults and loves playing with other dogs. Blackie was used as a stud and has been in a kennel since he was rescued. With the help of countless volunteers he has been socialized and loved, he has been evaluated by a professional trainer and is considered non aggressive but requires an owner that is familiar with dogs or is willing to put in the time that needs to be exercised and properly trained.

Foster Failure

I just recently became aware of this term. Thanks to FWFP I was a foster parent, sadly only briefly; then one day this little face came into my life and I was a goner! I've had many wonderful dogs throughout my life, but for some reason, this little guy holds a very special place in my heart.

I recently posed this question on FB, not expecting any one answer, one reply stuck with me, " it's because he was vulnerable and nearly destroyed and you saved him!!!"

Well, I'm starting to think he saved me. Our family dynamic has not been the same since he came into our lives -- and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Please join me in welcoming our new addition... Yuchie, a Chihuahua mix with the attitude of a Schnauzer!

A Foster Story

As a lifetime pet parent I always thought I knew everything there was to know about out "best friends", it took my two schnauzers to remind me that I don't know everything... and thanks to them, I'm still learning....

Thanks to Friends with Four Paws, I've had the pleasure of fostering three dogs to date, Yuchie is my third and he's been with us for a little over two months. I've been responsible for his daily care, but it has been Nellie & Calvert who have done the training. This little guy has blossomed since he's been here; Calvert has taught him to share and play and Nellie... well, she's taught him a thing or two about boundaries.

Hi everyone!

Hope you're enjoying the summer as much as we are. Our yearly visit to Maine allowed us to recharge the old batteries and enjoy some quality time without a TV, blackberry, internet or telephone. To say that Nellie & Calvert had a blast is an understatement! Thanks to Nellie, Calvert finally took his first swim.

Dear Friends,

So sorry that I have not been following all of you as much as I use to, I’ve been diagnosed with Graves Disease and it is taking me a bit longer than anticipated to get back to “normal”. Although normal for me would be an improvement :-).

Nellie & Calvert have been incredible therapy for me, if it were not for them my rehabilitation would be going much slower; I am truly blessed, they have been my guardian angels!

Nelllie: Our life is very difficult; between waiting for our wonderful walker to come and take us out for a stroll whilst our parents are at work and then waiting for them to come home from work… we are simply exhausted from all that waiting. Sigh…. We so need a holiday.

Calvert: Yeah, you said it… we need a holiday. Psssst, Savvy…. wots a holiday?!? Ummm?

Savannah: Oh brother, silly puppy; it’s when mommy and daddy go away to rest from it all.

Calvert: OH NO! AWAY!!! I is gonna miss them! Who’s gonna take care of us? I’m too little to be left alone.

Nellie: Cal, how many times have I told you not to interact with the white devil; they are going away but will be taking us with them. We all get to go away and from what I hear the daddy person is gonna teach you how to swim and he’s gonna tucker your puppy energy out!

Calvert: Oh goodies, my first holiday! Uh… Wots swim??

Savvy: Oh boy, it’s gonna be a looooong week.

We have been honored by our new and dear friend Luna with the following two awards

First the rules for "Oops I Ate it"

When accepting this award you must blog about the food you
have stolen when your humans weren't watching". If you have never stolen any food, you must be a very good pup or kitty!

Nellie: Truth be told, we are all very good doggies, Savannah is the most well behaved of us all (Shocker we know!) But yes, one time we did stray and picked up what we thought was the most delicious donut in the world -- from the street no less; our mommy was not pleased.

Calvert: Not pleased, understatement of the year! But it was totally worth the time out we got once we got home but we’ve learned our lesson and only pick up food when daddy walks us!

.......hehehe......

Awwww no donuts here~ sigh....

Wait a minute, wait a minute! What do you mean SHOCKER!?! ummmm...

This is the face of someone that can do no wrong.

I will not partake in this eating of the food thing; off the floor no less... ewwwwwwww. But I will take credit for this other very fashionable award since I am oh so hip and shall I say it, must I say it?

Well it seems as if all of us are back to normal;

(Savannah will never be normal, if you know what I mean wink wink ... )

Since mommy took such good care of us it is now our turn to take care of her. She's been home in bed all day, so I was kind enough to bring her my bone.

Thoughtful, aren't I?

Nellie's been trying to keep the princess quiet and still so mommy can get some rest.

ssshh... Savannah, mommy needs to rest....

Now mommy, we're going to sit here until you feel better.

We will keep watch and make sure you zzzzzz......

Howdy fellow doggie (and kitty) bloggers -

Thank you all for your good wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm finally feeling much better and doing my best to convince mommy that I require sweet potatoes and chicken all the time.

Sowwy we haven't blogged in a while but our official photographers (mommy and daddy) have been super busy making sure that Nellie gets better, cuz I gave her whatever I had. When mommy taught me how to share I was paying attention .... wink wink....

So stay tuned as we will have a guest blogger posting in the next few days. Savannah, aka "The White Devil" is on holiday with us for a whole month. So once the princess awakes from her beauty nap we will resume our regular blogging.

Sick Puppy...

Nel: Calvert the big baby is not feeling well, I'm keeping him company but doing my best not to get too close so I don't catch anything myself.

Nel: Mommy's giving him the remote control so he can watch his favorite show on Animal Planet. Spoiled brat.... No, I'm not bitter.... okay, perhaps just a tad jealous.

Cal: Owwwww.... my belly's been aching ever since I stuck my nose in mommy's cereal. How was I suppose to know I can't have mini wheats, something about too much fiber; oh well, they were yummy and totally worth my visit to the vet.

Cal: Dr. Kramer gave me lots of kisses and said I had to be put on a special diet for a while. Since I don't like rice or macaroni (yes I'm picky, wanna make something of it?!?) The doc recommended sweet potatoes... yummy, me likes them!

Cal: I don't know why mommy think's I need a fork; silly mommy... For the past three day's I've been eating like a king! Daddy's concerned I might not touch my regular puppy food again.... Ummm he must be reading my mind!

Cal: I started feeling a bit better after I ate and cuddled next to one of my favorite toys. That and having mommy at home with me all day helped a lot! Ahhhh.... I'm such a lucky puppy....

Hey Nel, what's this groomer thing mommy keeps talking about... ummm?

Well you see, this really great guy comes over and he beautifies us even more. I know we're adorable the way we are but apparently mommy likes having us even more b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l....

You'll see, it's not so bad, just try not to nip at him or else you won't get any cookies! I learned my lesson.

I don't get it, how can you possibly improve on perfection! I mean, after all just look at me, I can't get any cuter than this.

There is a Scarlet Puppynickle on the loose... He has hit the UK, Australia, Singapore and now he is in the USofA... Astoria, NY to be exact.

Here is his most recent victim....

Calvert: The puppynickle took mommies flip flop and had its way with it! It was horrible! I could not believe my little puppy eyes.... no puppy should be subjected to this....

I might need years of therapy to get the image out of my mind!

To all those puppy parents; your kids are innocent of any damage to your clothing, home, back yard, just about nothing is safe... it is not them but the merciless puppynickle. Do not, I repeat DO NOT blame your kids... thank you!
